Lucy is 6 years old. In June 2009 she was hit by a car near the Henderson Rec Centre. The injuries were serious and she underwent emergency surgery to reconstruct her right leg and repair multiple fractures. Her spine was damaged and initially we hoped she might recover her mobility and be able to go to the bathroom on her own. Sadly, her recovery stopped short. She does have sensation in her behind and tail but needs to be manually expressed.

She can move around the house but if she tries to do that outside she drags along the ground and can actually hurt herself without knowing it, so when going for a walk she needs a carriage (I have two) or carrier. She is a sweet affectionate little dog who seems to understand things are not the same. She would love to cuddle in my lap while I work on the computer but she slips off so I stopped. She can drag herself upstairs(!) and I cannot leave her unattended on the couch or bed – she will jump off and make a beeline for the nearest dogbed.

She sometimes sleeps over at Nirvana Pet resort when I’ve had to be out of town for more than 6 hours and she loves to keep everyone company. She sleeps in a little bed near the person who watches over the dogs.

Lucy deserves a life and she can bring a lot of love to someone who can care for her – I have to change my work environment which means I will be away from my home office a lot and unable to look after her. This is a decision I struggle with – I have endured a year of major change in my life and perhaps I hoped Lucy would be an anchor for me.

If you see her sweet face and pet her silky head you wont ever forget Lucy, please make her your next companion.

Cesar – Adoption pending…

Cesar is a neutered 1 yr old mastiff x. He came in as a stray from the CRD pound.

Cesar needs to go to a home without other dogs unless female, no cats and no small children. He is a happy boy but can be overbearing and hyper. He may knock small children over and chase cats. He gets along well with most dogs at his foster home and is well socialized with people. Since he so large and playful, he requires somebody who will be consistent with his training and can handle him as he is very strong. He loves water and is eager to learn. He could possibly be a great competitive obedience dog as he is so willing to work and please his owner. Cesar is a high energy boy who needs lots of exercise and playtime. He is very sweet and loveable and will make a great companion for somebody willing to put the time in for him.

Cesar has had a professional behaviour assessment completed and the results are as follows:

Cesar is a young, confident adolescent Mastiff X looking for a new home. The ideal home for Cesar is one with active, large breed experienced owners. If frequenting the dog park is your thing – Cesar is not the guy for you. Cesar plays appropriately with most dogs however, he will take on male dogs that challenge him. Pretty typical of teenage boys but this isn’t a behaviour we want him practicing! Cesar reportedly shows an unhealthy interest in cats so a home with no cats, small furry creatures or livestock is a must.

A big plus for Cesar is that he is an absolutely sweet with people. He exhibits no body handling issues and loves nothing more than to have his belly rubbed. Because of his size and zest for life though, a home with no small children is essential. He has good obedience skills and is a very willing worker. He responds incredibly well to reward based training and would do well in rally, obedience or tracking. I wouldn’t recommend agility due to his size/build. He has reportedly displayed some leash reactivity towards other dogs – with additional training I believe this will be easily resolved. Ideally Cesar will be the only dog in his new home. He could likely live peacefully with a large breed female dog [this would be assessed by our trainer]. He is an active boy so will need an active owner[s] to take him swimming, hiking, mountain biking etc. Continued training is also a must for this guy to get him through his teenage period.
