GVAC Volunteer & Foster, Jacqui, learns how to provide first aid for pets!

My name is Lynn Orser and I have been a foster mum for about three and half years, mostly with Furever After Small Dog Rescue, but also with Cat’s Cradle and Victoria Adoptables. I am on the BoD of Furever After Small Dog Rescue and have 3 dogs, 3 foster dogs and a cat.
My goals are to give people the “Peace of Mind” that their pets are well taken care of when they can’t, or when they might need some extra assistance. I want people to be able to stay with their pets forever, but I want to make sure that their pets are being cared for in the best possible way.
My business is not that of our wonderful dog walkers, but pop ins. This can be for a variety of reasons including:
•vacation
•hospital stay
•at work all day
•shift work
•insulin and/or other medications
•elderly or disabled that need help with animal care
…..and quite frankly any other reasons that may come up! I am geared toward small animals as my pop ins are 30 minutes at the most. Small dogs can be taken out for an around the block basis but I would not be enough for dogs that need a “real” walk.
If you have any questions or need more information I would be delighted to talk to you or send you one of my brochures. www.peaceofmindpopins.com

Chris is a monthly supporter for GVAC and we are taking this chance to say thank you to him and his company CB’s Autotech & Collision!
Chris & Linda are also a GVAC adoptive family – they adopted both Birdie & Tia from us, who are now the most pampered and happy cats I’ve ever seen!

A heartfelt thanks to both Chris & Linda for all that you do for the animals!
A protest march re the U-Vic rabbits is taking place downtown on Saturday, May 15th. March begins at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall. The supporters will be handing out leaflets as they march in order to educate people about the issue. Emphasis will be on the poison boxes at U-Vic that are killing the baby rabbits. The march will end at the Legislature at 3:00 and everyone will disperse.
I am a member of GVAC. I’m working with other concerned people on this issue of the feral rabbits. (We are the Ethical Options for Animals) If anyone is interested in learning more or helping us, please contact legislatekindness@gmail.com (our official mailbox) or me at mcrover@telus.net.
Be sure to pop by and support the cause! We are having a garage sale with all proceeds going to helping the animals in need.

Shaw Pet and Equine Hospitals (SPH) is sponsoring a veterinary medical mission to provide free vaccinations, deworming and general health exams. SPH recognizes the importance of the human/animal bond and hope to make a positive contribution to the community through providing basic veterinary care.
The team at SPH recognizes that it is difficult for low income owners to provide basic health care for domestic pets. By providing basic vaccinations and deworming, pets will be protected from serious infectious diseases and parasites.
Did you know?
· Many pets are surrendered to shelters each year because their owners cannot afford to properly provide for their needs.
· Unvaccinated pets and those with parasites pose a risk to family members, as certain diseases may be transmitted from animals to humans.
· Rabies is a viral disease that affects both animals and humans, is fatal and untreatable, yet is highly preventable through vaccination.
· Routine deworming of domestic dogs and cats is recommended by the Center for Disease Control and the Companion Animal Parasite Council
The Veterinarians and staff of SPH will be offering no-charge basic vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment and health examinations for the pets of Victoria’s homeless and Greater Victoria’s low income families on the afternoon of May 31st 2010. They will be located in the courtyard of the “Our Place” shelter on Pandora Avenue in downtown Victoria from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
SPH hopes this event is a success and can be repeated on a regular basis to provide important preventive health care for animals in need.
